Gunung Datuk

Date: 29 January 2011

Since my last trekking at Taman Negara 2 years ago, I’ve always wanted to have time to go trekking or hiking again. But time seems so limited to me and I ended up not doing it. Luckily for me, SIRIM organized a one-day trekking trip at Gunung Datuk, Rembau.

For those who loves trekking and used to more extreme trek, Gunung Datuk might not be adventurous enough for them. However, one must NEVER underestimate the difficulty of any trek, no matter how easy seniors or trek logs have said. And in the case of Gunung Datuk, the climb was quite steep, 70 – 80 degrees (enough to make you out of breath after 15 minutes) and the terrain was very rocky (you so don’t want to fall down and smash your head).

I read in some reviews that it would only takes 2 and half hour for two ways. Yeah, right!! It took me 2 hours just for one way!!! Or was it because of my small steps, few times of short breaks and also the rain??? Yeah, it was raining and it was very slippery. So we have to be EXTRA careful.

I managed to reach the summit at 1 pm, after 2 hours of trekking. There were actually two summits, which made up of natural stacked up boulders. It doesn’t need rock climbing though, because there are ladders for climbers. For me, climbing the ladders was the hardest part. It was dangerous so we need to be very, very careful with the steps.

The first summit was a little lower than the actual peak. The second one, which is the true summit, is a giant piece of rock. Once you are up there, you can see what they said as ‘Hang Tuah foot step’. And the scenery was so breathtaking!!! All the 2 hours trekking was really worthy. One thing you must take note is that…it is EXTREMELY windy; enough to make you feel like you were going to fall down. And believe me, it was not a nice feeling.

Overall, it was an awesome trekking experience. And maybe I would do it again!!
